Buckling Up Our Children

Traffic accidents in the UAE are the leading cause of death among children under the age of 14. Using seat belts and child seats can cut down this rate by 71%, according to the Health Authority Abu Dhabi. However, a shocking 98% of children are not properly strapped in and 96% are not seated correctly.

Such a pressing issue drove Lesley Cully to create Buckle Up In The Back in 2010. This non-profit awareness campaign highlights the need to restrain children in the back of cars by a seat belt in a child or booster seat.

A mom to 2 beautiful girls, raising awareness among other parents and children, schools, colleges, and nurseries is a subject close to her heart. “If I only end up saving a life or preventing 1 serious injury then the whole thing is worth it,” she says.

Cully is working hard with others to influence the passing of a well enforced law that commits rear passengers to buckle up.
