Though they have been under siege for over two years, the residents of the Old City of Homs insist on the power of hope—and turning it to practical purposes. Against hunger and malnutrition, its young people have joined forces through “Siege Food”, a Facebook page dedicated to sharing simple new recipes and innovative combinations that can be created depending on the availability of particular herbs, spices and other ingredients.
Their ingenuity is visible in picture after picture of delicious dishes featured on the site. Before any recipe is published, its masterminds test it first by trial and error to find the best possible taste and nutrient value. They accompany the photos with careful instructions on how to prepare it. In the face of food blockade, “Siege Food” provides a window onto the strength of ordinary people’s patience and solidarity through the sharing of life-giving sustenance.
“In spite of constantly struggling with hunger and suffering, we insist on living positively, and please God with our faith that one day we will live a happy life because of our patience,” the page declares. Its dishes carry the same clear message: more important than the separate ingredients and the number of calories in each is the act of faith that went into its creation.
