For many, Amman’s bustling Souk Al Abdali, or Friday market, is a quintessential stop for house ware, clothes, shoes, random electronics and even vegetables and fruits. Frequented by Amman’s local and expat communities, Souk Al Abdali is a neighborhood staple, named after the area which it has resided since 1988. From above, the souk looks like a smothering of colored candy wrappers, representing the different stalls and plastic tarp covers vendors use to protect their wares, but from within, the souk is a teeming, sensory-overload market known for its lively atmosphere and quality items for bargain-worthy prices.

Our photographer, Sami Haven, visited the souk this week, before it officially changed its location on October 10 from Jabal Al-Weibdeh (Abdali) to Ras Al-Ain due to over-crowding, poor organization and general safety concerns. Though many are shocked and disheartened by this news, we feel confident that the new location will bring with it a slew of new vendors, safer shopping conditions for all visitors, and a new opportunity to create an equally enjoyable community atmosphere in the heart of Amman’s historic downtown area. Let the bargaining continue!

What are your thoughts on the change in location? Let us know in the comments below!
