Throwback Thursday: Rare Footage of Old Cairo

Alternative Cairene band Go! Save the Hostages! produced this stunning video footage of scenes of sprawling old Cairo in the 1950s along to their song Souvenir Du Caire. The footage is reminiscent of scenes depicted in many of Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz’s books, like the Cairo Trilogy, where neighborhoods doubled as larger nuclear families and women wore floral dresses during the peak of the summer heat. The video features variations of life, both in Cairo’s most crowded areas and in still undeveloped, extensive desert spaces, showing that some things haven’t changed.

For more information: Check out more of their music here, and follow the duo on Facebook.
