From natural curves to vertiginous cliff “mosaics”: this is the story of Amman’s changing face, as presented by Foresight Gallery’s Hani Hourani, one of the many artists that participated in the city’s Art Week. Indeed, this arts festival revealed yet another face of the ever-evolving city. Throughout the second week of September, art came out to the people in myriad forms and approaches.
Exhibitions and sales were accompanied by lectures, workshops, movies, educational outreach and performances by local bands. Topics under discussion ranged from Jordan’s place in the international art market to the relation between class and artistic production and an assessment of freedom of expression in the regional art scene. Workshops also ran the gamut from graphic design and digital technologies to fashion illustration and marketing. As Lina Ghanem, one of the artists featured in the playful group installation on urban isolation, put it, “Creativity is our new economy!”
