Recently the site shared the fascinating history of the Ancient Berbers, whom the Barbary Coast of North Africa was named after. These people, typically living nomadic lifestyles, lived throughout the area west of the Nile Valley in North Africa.
Known as the Amazigh or Imazighen, which means “free humans”, these groups are the oldest inhabitants of North Africa. Their history and culture spans the region and has left its mark throughout Africa and the Middle East. Archaeologists have been able to trace the origins of Berbers back to Caspians, a North African group whose history dates back more than 10,000 years.
Referenced by Ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans as far back as 3,000BC, it is fascinating to see how this group had its impact on a variety of people throughout the region despite never having a unified land.
