Syria Business NGOs, Nonprofits & Charities 13 Smiles by Valentina Primo 18/12/2014 During the VI International Conference “Volunteerism, avenue for social transformation”, held in Perm, Russia, last November, BarakaBits met Dmitri Demidenko, project manager of Star Soap , an artistic exhibition devoted to helping children with cancer. Last Christmas, Demidenko called for a campaign joining famous vector graphic artists from each corner of the world to produce holiday cards for children suffering from cancer. The initiative reached Syria, where the disease only adds to a fragile context where conflict and insecurity prevail.
Fifty designers across India, Brasil, USA, Germany, Australia, Russia, Ukraine and many other countries crafted 40,000 greeting cards, while Demidenko and his partner Alexander Sheryakov held a morning breakfast in Damascus. “Syrian children got mail from Russia, but for us, it was a way to bring the world’s attention to this forgotten land,” he tells Barakabits.
