“I am the honor, the shame, I am everything, I am nothing, but remind me; who are you?”, sings Maysa Daw, the newest member of the Palestinian hip hop band DAM. Produced in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), “Who are you?” tackles women’s rights and criticizes the patriarchal society of Palestine where the group grew up.
Known as Palestine’s first hip hop group, the band is composed of brothers Tamer and Suheil Nafar and Mahmood Jreiri, who came together in 1999 in the city of Lyd. They have released two albums and starred in the documentary film “Slingshot Hip Hop.”
“I’m very proud of both the song and the video. I think it is an honest attempt at criticizing our society. Men try to stereotype women all the time, and I just want to ask which stereotypes define men, if any?,” said Daw in an interview with +972 magazine.
