How Oman’s First Online News Site Bloomed from the Ground

Oman The Arts TV, Film & Online Video 7 Smiles by Valentina Primo 03/12/2014 As Arab youth turned to social media for news headlines, a team of journalists partnered to build Oman’s first online news site from scratch. Created in 2012, Al Balad has steadily grown its audience, offering an alternative news coverage that involves the civil society. Al Balad capitalizes on younger generation engagement through social media and interactive services, such as a the Readers’ Journalism section , which allows readers to share their stories and ideas.

Infographics, multimedia content, and videos make the website a favorite among Omani youth. Initiated with a minimal initial investment of 1,000USD, the website has managed to attract advertisement and compete with longer-established online magazines. Through a team of volunteers and partnerships with local radio stations, the online news outlet is slowly building a strong alternative to traditional media.
